Breastfeeding in Style: Spring 2012 Neat Knits

{Pregnancy Cravings}: Avocado, Tomato and Sprouts Sandwich

THIS IS AN ADDENDUM TO THIS POST. I did this whole post and got responses about food borne illnesses associate with raw sprouts. So I think this should be well known to pregnant women out there. Here's the info. If you want, just swap out the sprouts with some mixed greens. I still love this recipe, so make and eat it at your own risk, mmmk?
     If there's any time in your life to try and be your healthiest, it should be when you're pregnant. I mean, you are nourishing a sensitive, tiny little being. So many people think this is the time to eat, eat, eat, and usually it's a bunch of crapola. Sad to say, but our placenta is ancient and doesn't have the ability to protect our babies from all of modern day's chemicals, pesticides and just plain rubbish. You may not think it has a huge effect, but really, you just don't know. So I think it's best to err on the side of caution. {Obviously, there's a time for treats and sweets, which I still enjoy in moderation :)}
So for me, pregnancy has pushed me into a big health kick. We've actually been 90% vegetarian because (A) I have pretty much lost my appetite for meat this pregnancy (B) We watched the documentary Forks over Knives and even my "Meat and Potatoes" husband is all about it and (C) Access to organic meats here on the North Shore is really poor. I should also add that cooking vegetarian is a whole lot easier and quicker than I thought. Meals are simpler and honestly, besides cooking meat in the slow cooker, I really hated it and worried if I was cooking the meat correctly. So now I feel like there's a huge weight off my shoulders when it comes to dinner time.
If there's interest, I can share a list of the foods and snacks I've been eating, but for now, I wanted to share one of my favorite and EASY sandwich recipes I have been making all of the time.
AVOCADO, TOMATO AND SPROUTS SANDWICH
-Whole wheat bread. We like the Organic Brand~ Rudi's
-1/2 of and Avocado
-1/2 of a Tomato
-Some sort of vegetable sprouts (I used broccoli sprouts)
-Mayonnaise or some sort of dressing (I don't like dry sandwiches)
-Salt and Pepper to taste
*If you're still a meat eater, you can add some grilled chicken or sliced turkey.

Pretty simply...
1. Just put your mayo on the bread.
2. Slice up your avocado and tomato.
3. Layer the tomato and avocado slices.
4. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.

5. Pile a bunch of sprouts on top.
6. And ENJOY!
I like to make a sandwich or two at a time so that I have a quick snack for later or the next day. Also, find out more about the health benefits of sprouts, here.

A Happy and Healthy Pregnancy to all you Gorgeous Mamas out there!

Maryam

{TUTORIAL}: How to Change Your Swimsuit Halter to a Racerback

Believe it or not, swimsuits are my most favorite thing to shop for. In the recent years I have been limited to buying racerback and bandeau style suits because the halter top styles seem to give me a huge headache. This happen to anyone else???
I have a pretty large collection of swimsuits and all of my halter style suits have been shelved because of this headache thing. Today, I had a revelation and decided to figure out how I can still wear my favorite halter top swimsuits and still be headache free. So here it is, the no-sew, easy peazy way to switch your halter to a racerback swimsuit.
For you visual/audio types, here's more of the explanation and the video tutorial:

I hope it works for you all so you can really kickback, relax and enjoy yourself some vitamin D.

{Breastfeeding in Style}: Taking a look from Day to Night

Breastfeeding in Style: Day to Night Outfit

I feel like as the weather gets warmer, there's always more and more excitement to spend a full day out and about. Since we live about an hour away from "town", a lot of times it means there will be some special activity during the day, maybe a nap time in the car or on the beach and then a yummy dinner to follow.
My favorite dress it up or dress it down item is a neutral midi or maxi dress. It just takes a jacket or shoe swap to transition it from casual to fancy. In my dream world, I would DIE to rock those hot citrine wedges, but Hawaii ain't that snazzy... But I do know that there are mamas out there that could and should wear those puppies out!
I should also mention, that since this dress is strapless, a lot of you have been asking about what to do in the bra department. I am a devoted fan of a good bandeau bra for all your strapless needs. They tend to be wireless, making it way easier to pull up or down to breastfeed and they are super comfortable in my book. You can browse the Pinterest Board I made dedicated to bandeau bras to find the one that you think would work best for you.
So do you feel the urge to be more fancy shmancy these days?

Maryam

Celebrating Earth Day: Green Your Air Discount

This coming Sunday is Earth Day, and I thought I should share that there's something special going on over at my biz Green Your Air. If you don't know about my mom-run eco-friendly plant business, I mentioned it here and here. My co-owner Jennifer and I are very dedicated to moms and their family's well-being and it's sad to know that our homes can harbor so many toxic chemicals. We hope that our natural plants can do their part to filter these chemicals and make for a beautiful space.
So in honor of Earth Day, all this week*, you can enjoy 20% off your entire order from the Green Your Air site by using EARTHDAY at checkout. Buy some plants for your home and/or send a plant as a special gift to family or friends to show you care. And for a special thank you to you and Mother Earth, we are giving you a small packet of some beautiful Daisy seeds. These just aren't any Daisies, they actually remove benzene (which is a well known carcinogen) and trichloroethylene from the air!
Also, if you're a blogger and would like to share this promotion with your readers in a post, you'll get your own 50% off code. Once your post is up, you can email me maryam{at}greenyourair{dot}com and I'll send you your special discount code.
As always, a huge thank you from our families to your's.

With Love,
Maryam

*Discount ends Sunday the 22nd. Orders placed by Friday the 20th will be sent out on Monday the 23rd and any orders placed on Saturday or Sunday will be shipped on Tuesday the 24th. We are only able to ship plants within the mainland US.

{Fortuna Family Happenings}: Here I am at 27 Years Old

This past Wednesday the 11th, I celebrated my 27th birthday. Because I always dreamed of being a young mom with lots of children, my life plan was to get married by 22 (which I did) and have a baby when I was 23 (did that too.) Even though the past four years have been a serious whirlwind/roller coaster, it feels really amazing to look back at a few of the little moments that have made me into the woman that I am today. Sometimes you need to slow down, browse through some old pictures and just soak in and appreciate everyone and everything you have in your life at this very moment.
Here's a little photo series of my birthdays starting 4 years ago

7 months pregnant with Coral at my birthday brunch. Pictured with my cousin May and my sister May photobombing in the background. I felt very young, but (naively) confident of how motherhood would be. I felt empowered and confident in myself to have my first baby at home with a planned a homebirth which was completely amazing.

The first year of motherhood was probably the hardest year.of.my.life. Couldn't even find a picture of myself in the month of April. Coral is 10 months here and really, one of the cutest looking kids I ever did see. I guess he had to be extraordinarily cute to get me through that first year. Also, around this time, we started for baby #2. I

Second year of motherhood and we already had two beautiful boys. Coral is 22 months and Sky is a wee 3 1/2 months. Transitioning to two under two years old wasn't as hard as I thought and Sky was a much more mellow infant. I felt like I was just starting to grab hold of the old me and balance the new me as a mother of two.

This is the year Brian flew us up to San Francisco for my birthday. This trip was just perfect. Also, I literally just started Milk-Friendly (April Archive) and launched my own business Green Your Air. I can honestly say that not only was I getting a hang of this mother thing, but I was flourishing. Balancing a marriage, the children and being able to explore creative outlets and help others was HUGE for me. On this trip, we also found out I was pregnant with a baby that we lost at 6 weeks (I still need to share about that sometime soon.)

And here we are today. We moved to Oahu, are blessed with another baby boy and I am very happy and content with this life I have. The week before my actual birthday, Brian's parents were here visiting and my only birthday wish was to have time to shop all myself. Brian, MaMaw and PawPaw had the boys playing on the beaches of Waikiki, and I got to spend a solid 2, maybe 3 hours shopping at Forever 21, running across town to get my phone screen fixed, riding a taxi by myself and meeting up with the family I so dearly missed for dinner at the Cheesecake Factory.
This was a perfect day for me.
Then the day before my actual birthday, we went back into Honolulu, Brian dropped me in the Bike Shop to look for a possible new bday bike while the boys slept in the car. We enjoyed dinner at The Counter and got Whole Foods Groceries- woohoo.
That night, Sky struck a fever with what we've anticipated is due to his 2 year old molars making their debut. His fever lasted my whole birthday but for me, that meant extra cuddles and a great appreciation for the role that I am so lucky to have. We made it out for a sunset park session. I got to play with Coral while Sky passed out on Daddy and we had pizza and pasta for dinner.
Still, another great day.

THANK YOU
to everyone out there for all the birthday wishes
and especially for being a part of our lives.
HERE'S TO ANOTHER YEAR!

I also wanted to share a birthday card I got from my sister Amy. It was one of those cards that spoke so true to me and really brought a tear in my eye. I think every mom out there can appreciate it.
